The so-called Castle of Silvi (and an introduction to Historical Archivies of Silvi)
(1799-1925)
The work for salvaging began on February 2006
dusting
sorting and making an inventary oh historical archivies of Silvi. Overhal cost of such work is 6.000
00 EUR and it has been performed by experienced archivist. Before intervention
historical archivies have been left upon store floor room subject to neglet conditions. Unfortunately during past decades many losses were occurred. During WWII evacuation it was divided and trasferred in different places as Silvi Paese
San Silvestre and Atri. Maybe some materials were been lost or never retrieved. Most ancient documents (middle ages) concerning th so-called Castle of Silvi
including paleographical documents (parchments)
are preserved in the State Archives of Teramo and in Capitulary Archivies of Atri
and also in the Diocesian Curia Archivies of Atri
in the Historical Archivies of Atri (File of Bozza and Silvi) and in the town hall library of Atri.
Further it has been proposed a regional financed project for retriving
where possible
of absent documents. Claimable documents by Silvi's ownership will be brought back and those documents whose ownership is under other bodies will be duplicated. Anyway
present historic archivies of Silvi are a primary source for those who wish to investigate and study the history of Silvi. Suffice is to say about marital status files useful for genealogical searches
or about older land registry useful for discover toponomies
or about files of World Wars with names of died
missing and veteran soldiers and about many others themes. Historical archivies are basics both for competent and amateurish historiographers
but they represent the body of memory for any community and so they deserve effective structure for hosting.
Duplicates of some pick-up among older documents are showed in this section. First documents group traces back to 1811 and concerns municipal bidding for various services (tax collection
bread-making
leases) carried out under office of Major Salvatore Ajelli. Notably
it is reported that bread-making industy was assigned to Pasquale di Cesare from Spoltore (he had to engage himself to supply bread for people and to make it at right wigh
well-baked and of best quality). There are also calls for leasing of grazing-land in the marshlands and flats in the village. Another issue concerns the service for collection of gabelle on wine sellers and duty on sold fishes. Bargaining was performed by an auctioneer who started autcions bu lightening first a candle and then another one: auction was over when second candle blew out andh the winner was the highest offer. Only two stamps are here exhibited: one for Bourbonist Kingdom and the other for "Castrum Silvi". Such documents report about people who lived mainly by fisheries
husbandries and farmings.
The other documents tell about payments for the rentals of clericals properties located in Silvi's territory. The oldest document traces back to 1799 (it is present in archives as a conformed copy in 1819) and it mention "Castle of Silvi" and not "Comune di Silvi" (that means municipality). It may confirm that also in Silvi it has been introduced the modern concept of "municipality" only after Napoleon's invasion of Italy
as for the other italian towns. Here following is also shown the layout of Silvi Paese on 1925
where main circus (the present Piazza Largo della Porta) was called "Largo degli Alberelli" and it was present the Saint Antony church razed in 1947-1951 a replaced by homonymous square.
